What can I expect from a session?
We will meet at a mutually arranged time and will not be disturbed for the length of our session, usually 50 minutes. This creates a confidential, safe space where you can bring whatever is foremost for you. It may be a situation, a feeling, a thought, a behaviour, a conflict, a confusion, a dream, a somatic complaint or even a not knowing.
We will investigate together how best to relieve the pressure caused by what you have brought. This may be through bringing an awareness and understanding to the topic; releasing an emotion response; noticing and changing a behaviour that may be contributing; learning new patterns of responses; or sometimes sharing together just how difficult it is for you. Mostly this is facilitated through sitting and talking to each other, but occasionally it may be appropriate to move around the room, try out different ways of experiencing or draw what needs to be expressed and understood. My belief is that counselling sessions should be led by the client's needs and wants and this is what I aim to practice at each session.
Where will we meet?
I work at The Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre in Old Town, Swindon. There are several local car parks and good transport links. The centre has toilet facilities.
When we arrange a session, we will agree a day and time and I will let you know which room we will be in. As you approach the front door, there is a panel on the left and if you press the room number I have given you, I will be able to talk to you on the intercom and open the door for you. I will meet you on the stairs and show you to our room.
How many sessions will I need to attend?
This is a tough question to answer as each client and their difficulties is unique and so therefore is each therapy. It also depends on what you want to achieve from your counselling. Some clients are looking to resolve a single issue while others struggle in many areas of their lives and wish to work more deeply and for longer.
We can agree to work for a certain number of weeks (usually 6-12) which can be reviewed and extended. Or we can choose to work together in a more open-ended generally longer-term way. In both cases, you are under no obligation to remain, although I request notice of 2-3 sessions so that we can say good-bye and consolidate our work in a way that enables you to take it forward with you when you leave.
What is your cancellation policy?
I do not charge for cancellations where 48 hours notice has been given.
If there is less than 48 hours notice and we are able to rearrange our session within the same week, I do not charge for the cancellation.
The fee where we are unable to rearrange or for other missed appointments with less than 48 hours notice is chargeable.
