What can I expect from a session?

We will meet at a mutually arranged time and not be disturbed for the length of our session - usually 50 minutes. This creates a confidential, safe space where you can bring whatever is foremost for you. It may be a situation, a feeling, a thought, a behaviour, a conflict, a confusion, a dream, a somatic complaint or even a not knowing.

We will investigate together how best to relieve the pressure caused by what you are experiencing. This may be through bringing an awareness and understanding to the topic; releasing an emotional response; noticing and changing a behaviour that may be contributing; learning new patterns of responses; or sometimes sharing together just how difficult it is for you. Mostly this is facilitated through sitting and talking to each other, but occasionally it may be appropriate to move around the room, try out different ways of experiencing or draw out what needs to be expressed and understood. My belief is that therapy sessions should be led by the client's needs and wants and this is what I aim to practice at each session.

Where will we meet?

I work from a private consulting space at home or at The Counselling & Psychotherapy Centre in Old Town, Swindon. Both locations benefit from parking nearby and good public transport links.

How many sessions will I need to attend?

Each client is unique and so is their therapeutic journey. Therapy depends on what you want to achieve from your sessions. Some clients are looking to resolve a single issue while others struggle in many areas of their lives and wish to work more deeply and for longer.

We can agree to work for a certain number of weeks (usually 6-12) which can be reviewed and extended. Or we can choose to work together in a more open-ended way over a longer term. In either case, you are under no obligation to remain, although I request notice of 2-3 sessions so that we can say goodbye and consolidate our work in a way that enables you to take it forward after you leave.

What is your cancellation policy?

I do not charge for cancellations where we are able to rearrange within the same week or where seven days notice has been given. Where we are unable to rearrange within the same week or for other missed appointments, the session is chargeable.
